Tricks a plenty, starting with some Hadlow grabs

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Aaron Hadlow GrabOver the past couple of weeks we’ve been compiling a list of every tricks we can imagine, with every possible grab, tweak, pop, pass combination. The list currently runs at just over 200 tricks and I’m sure we’ve still got a way to go! As we started to show in our last few videos there is so many things you can do to make any basic trick a little more interest, just by throwing one of the many grabs, and that goes for riders of any level, whether your doing a straight jump or powered handle pass.

So we hope to have a constant barrage of trick definition videos to show you from this point onwards and to kick things off we’ve taken a dip in our archive and found some footage we shot nearly 3 years ago with Aaron Hadlow when we were making the Kiteboarding Professional DVD – here are 4 tricks all based around the Back roll to blind with an Airpass but each has a different grab that adds a little something different to each one:

Back 2 Blind with an Airpass and a Back Hand nose grab

Back 2 Blind with an Airpass and an Indie Grab

Back 2 Blind with an Airpass and a Nose Grab

Back 2 Blind with an Airpass and a Tail Grab

In a couple of days will have some video for the Intermediates out there with some more grabbed transition…

James Boulding Interview – Sharing the stoke

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Many people outside the UK may never of heard of James Boulding but we think that’s gonna change over the coming year. He’s had a pretty outstanding 2009 – 2nd Overall Pro in the BKSA national tour; an accomplished BKSA instructor and Coach; he’s accompanied Fat Sand on two trips filming in Turkey and Egypt,  and to round it all off he’s earned himself a spot on the Liquid Force International Team! We couldn’t be happier for him, he’s a talented rider who’s willing to work hard on and off the water! You’ll see him in many of our latest trick definition videos and whilst in Egypt Will got him in front of the camera for a quick interview which turned into a mammoth one. So here is the first of a 3 part interview – this one Will has appropriately named ”Sharing the Stoke“:

James Boulding Interview

James is currently out in Egypt with Sam Light and Ali Barrett kiting and filming, so expect some nice videos coming from James, himself, over the next few weeks.

You can find out more about James at his website or follow him on twitter.

Fat Sand / Progression filming at KTA China Event

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

kta_b_lWe are really excited to announce our partnership with the newly formed Kiteboard Tour Asia (KTA). Fat Sand / Progression will be heading out to China early next week for the inaugural event where riders from across Asia will come together to compete in Freestyle and Course Racing competition.

Progression will be at the event to capture all the action on camera and deliver regular videos updates through the KTA YouTube channel, our hope is to give you a taster of all the goings on at China’s first IKA recognised kitesurfing event. The KTA aims to help aspiring kitesurfers across Asia to gain competition experience and hopefully provide a stepping stone to the world tour competitions. Its also an opportunity for some amazing kitesurfing spots to gain exposure to a wider kitesurfing audience. Hopefully the videos we create with the KTA, will give a greater insight into these great locations, and the riders that we will meet along the way, inspiring you to get out and ride and maybe even visit a new destination in the not to distance future.

As Progression moves forward over the coming years, we aim to inspire and motivate you to be a better kitesurfer. We think that competition is one way in which many riders can focus on improving their kiting skills whether its at a professional, semi-professional or amateur level. Its not for everyone but for those that get involved it will push them to try something new and share that with a group of other riders.

Being part of the KTA events also gives us an opportunity to meet a whole load more kitesurfers, finding out what they what to see from us. You can expect to see a many more interviews on our website, along with more videos in our ever expanding trick definition library, all taken at the KTA events.

We’re also lucky to have Dimitri Maramenides, launching his new kite brand, Epic Kites at the China event. Anyone who has seen him ride will know that he has a pretty explosive style and for those that haven’t, you’ll be able to soon enough, as we’ll no doubt capture Dimitri peforming at his best in Xiamen next weekend!

Stay tuned to www.progression.me, www.kiteboardtour.asia and www.youtube.com/kiteboardtourasia for updates.

Davey Blair interview – waves, barrels and slider presses

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

This is one of my favourite interviews we’ve done so far. To be honest I didn’t know a whole lot about Davey Blair, other than seeing a few photos in the various mags (notably a pretty cool cover in the last issue of Kiteworld mag) and knowing he was part of that cool group of Hawaii kiters who seem to get on every amazing filming trip with Elliot Loboe or John Bilderback! Anyway, he was over for the Kiteworld Slider Jam and Jim (editor-in-chief) was kind enough to shepherd Davey around to our offices so we could get a different view point from our previous interviews, which admittedly focus more on the freestyle riding (of course Steph Bridge’s course racing board interview is an exception). Davey is a North Shore, Oahu, resident and so riding waves is a huge passion for him and I was excited to see what motivates and inspires him to get out there and battle the towering mountains that attack the Hawaiian islands. He’s also into his powered riding, particularly hitting kickers and sliders so he had a few words to day say about that side of things too.

My only regret with this interview was not finding a way to include my favourite response to my common question “What would you do if a friend is getting bored and de-motivated kitesurfing?” Normally this gains replies which are practical – try a new trick; kite at a different beach; take a trip with some friends. Not for Davey, his response – “Tell him he’s a little girl and then slowly increase the trash talk until he or she is riled up and they want to prove to me that they can do more on the water” – this was a serious response, said with determination, Davey loves kiting and will do what he was to to make sure everyone around him is loving it too!

Davey Blair Interview

And we’ve got more videos coming over the next week – A 3 part James Boulding interview – we just couldn’t shut him up! Plenty more trick definition videos to get you inspire to try something new, including some Aaron Hadlow clips from the Progression vault that are as innovative now, as when I filmed them nearly 3 years ago!

Jumping technique and when to sheet the bar in…

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

There is a good post on the kiteboarder.co.uk technique forum where someone asked about when you should sheet the bar in when loading up for a jump. I thought this was a good and interesting question as you see so many people out kiting who have terrible jumping technique – they might get out of the water but they are not getting anywhere near as much height as they could if they just adapted their technique a little.

Anyway, I created this short video, just a couple of clips, where Karine shows perfectly how the bar should be sheeting in during a jump:

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

These clips come from the Intermediate Volume 1 DVD that we are currently editing, where all aspects of jumping will be covered in detail.

Kite Course Racing interview with Steph Bridge

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Kite course racing is starting to take off in a big way, both at a professional level but also for any kiters looking for something different to try. Whilst at the Blackpool BKSA we got to chat with Steph Bridge, the 2009 PKRA Ladies course racing champion & owner of Edge Waterstarts in Exmouth. In the interview we focused on the new board designs which have come about in the past few months and in particular the popular North Race Ltd board. Check out the interview to find out a bit more about racing and how the development of these styles of boards (and the huge fins) are helping racers and lightwind cruisers get the best out of the conditions.

Tricks Definitions : Shiftys, Grabs & One Footers!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Its been a while since we released some trick definition videos, but the boys got some great footage on the latest trip to Egypt so here are the first 5 but we have plenty more to come over the next few weeks. Remember they are only 30-40 seconds long and aren’t trying to teach you how to do the trick but hopefully you may see something here, or amongst our other trick & technique definition videos, which will motivate you to go out and try something new or revisit a trick you haven’t tried for a while:

All these videos feature Fat Sand’s newest recruit James Boulding with Will Milne doing his thing behind the camera.

Filming the next DVD in Egypt, take 2

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Egypt-James-cruiseI was lucky enough to fly out to Egypt for a week, with James Boulding, to film for the next Progression DVD, Kiteboarding Intermediate Volume 1. We had already filmed a large part of this DVD, last year when we went to Egypt with Christian and Karine to film the updated Kiteboarding Beginner DVD, but we were missing a load of shots and the British summer didn’t really give us the clear blue skies we need.

So we headed to Soma Bay as James has spent a number of seasons there teaching and coaching and knew the area like the back of his hand. The spot is perfect with a variety of lagoons and sandbars providing butter flat water at low tide and waist deep water as far as the eye can see, ideal for all levels of freestyle riders. The wind starts to builds at around 9am, cross off. Then fills in at around 10-11am and swings round to cross shore and cleans up. If the wind is strong it will blow all day otherwise skip lunch as the wind will drop at around 2.30.

We had early starts planned for most of the week to catch the wind, although I initially had a couple of rough nights sleep adapting to James sleep shouting & random bursts of noise (not necessarily words!)

Egypt_Raley_wide_med

We filmed and kited at the Mark Warner centre where there were more intermediate riders and generally much quieter. A few riders had a respectable arsenal of intermediate tricks on both tacks, but it still amazed me how many still kited with bad stance due to their equipment not being tuned properly. Most riders didn’t really understand how to adjust their kites to make their stance more bearable in stronger winds. Typically one arm is fully stretched to control the bar and the other out straight behind to help counter balance their weight and stop them being pulled forwards. I think the only rider with a sensible stance was James and one other instructor! On the flipside in lighter winds you would see a lot of large kites stalling and riders sinking, where as you could actually (with good technique) happily stay upwind with a kite a couple of metres smaller. I would recommend to anyone who has brought a new kite whether they are a Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced to take time one session and test out the different settings on the bar and the kite’s pigtails to see how they effect the power and the speed that your kite can turn.

Cover-Box-Shadow-PKBIV1-MedFunnily enough these three areas – lightwind riding, highwind riding and kit tuning, were what we were out in Egypt to film. The new Intermediate DVD is all about taking the next steps on from being a competent beginner. Starting off with your first tricks – toeside riding, carving turns & jumping but just as important is to increase your confidence and understand of your locations, conditions and equipment, allowing you to kite in a wider range of wind strengths and locations, and importantly getting your stance sorted so you learn new tricks far easier. We’ll have information on this new DVD over the coming weeks as we get closer to its release in November.

New Video Interview – Dan Sweeney

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Another week another Progression interview! This time we caught up with Dan Sweeney at his local beach to have a chat about the tricks he is currently working on and we got some great insight into the steady progression from a raley up to one of Dan’s latest tricks, the S-Bend Pass.

Screen shot 2009-10-05 at 12.17.41

And for those of you who don’t know Dan, he’s one of the UK’s best up and coming riders, currently leading the Junior category at the BKSA national tour. Definitely a rider to watch out for in the future!
