I started Fat Sand in 2003 with my best mate Peter Kyle. I was bored of being a web developer and he had just finished a PhD in Development Studies, we both needed something different to get our teeth into, so we took my love of kitesurfing and Pete’s photography obsession and Fat Sand Productions was born. Progression was our first title, it was an experiment to make a great instructional DVD for intermediates, with me riding and Pete filming, we never really planned to make any more instructional videos but we stumbled upon a method of instruction that peopled really connected with and as they say the rest was history.
I’d love to say that I kite every day and am living the dream of ever obsessed kitesurfer, but the reality is that running a video production company takes up alot of time and I love the work we do, so it all works well in the end. And when I do get out on the water, for me its about kiting with friends, trying some new tricks and often thinking through aspects of whatever video we are making, trying the moves and looking for those little extra things that can make a difference.
My Progression Profile
I love kiting because: it the watersport that gives you best connection to the water, and at the same time the most freedom. If you love the sea then kitesurfing is just amazing, whether its just crusing around or learning tricks
I hate kiting because: I constantly see the best guys in the world and wish I could do what they do. Problem is I just don’t get that much time on the water as my workaholic natural is a constant conflict!
Level: Advanced (kind of, could be slipping back to intermediate if I don’t nail some powered passes soon!)
Currently Learning: Raley to Blind, big kiteloops – not quite up for proper megaloops quite yet
Also enjoying revising all my old-school tricks on over-powered days.
Want to be learning: Low Back Mobe – if I can one day nail one of these I will be a happy man, nothing looks cooler!
Favorite trick: I love kiteloops, but also you can’t beat a hugh stalled back roll. I remember seeing a guy head out in Morocco 7 years ago, first run he went full speed into a 6 foot wave and just boosted so high and just floated around an inverted back roll, so in control, heaps of style for something so simple – still love them to this day.
Struggle with: Getting the right conditions for learning unhooked tricks, if only shoreham had a butter smooth flat water spot!!!
